Client FAQ

What is the difference between psychotherapy and an online coaching program?

Psychotherapy and Coaching both support personal growth but they are distinct services with different purposes.

Psychotherapy is a healthcare service intended to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma etc.

Coaching, by contrast, is not psychotherapy, mental health treatment, or a substitute for counseling and medical care.

Coaching is a future-focused and time limited service designed to help individuals clarify goals, build skills, and create strategies for personal growth. It does not include diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions.

How do I pay for sessions?

Clients pay for sessions on the day they occur. I accept cash, check, Zelle, or Credit Card.

Coaching programs are paid for in full or on a monthly payment plan via credit card.

Do you have a sliding scale?

Yes. I reserve a few sliding scale slots for clients who cannot afford to pay the full session fee. This would be discussed and decided upon at the beginning of treatment.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not bill insurance companies directly, however, if you have out-of-network mental health   benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement in part or full. Clients pay out of pocket for sessions initially, and then I will give you a receipt for you to submit to your insurance company for the prior month’s sessions. The insurance company will then send YOU a reimbursement check directly.

If you’re not sure if you have out of network benefits, you will want to contact your provider and ask them the following questions:

Do I have out of network mental health coverage?

  1. If yes, what is my deductible?
  2. How much do you reimburse for sessions?
  3. How do I submit my receipts to you so that you can reimburse me directly?
Is an initial consultation free?

Yes. If you are interested in beginning therapy or a coaching program, send me an email and we will set up an initial 15-20 minute free phone consultation. This will give me a chance to get to know you a bit and for me to see if I’m the best person to help you. It will also give you a chance to ask any questions you may have and see if you’d like to work with me.

Do I need to have an initial consultation before purchasing the online self-paced version of The Grounded Within Lab?

No! If you are interested in purchasing the Grounded Within Lab self-paced program, you are free to take it without a consultation. However, you’re always welcome to get in touch if you have any questions you’d like answered before purchasing.

Can I be a psychotherapy client and also take one of your coaching programs?

Unfortunately, no. If you are currently a psychotherapy client, you cannot also enroll in one of the coaching programs. This separation ensures that we avoid role confusion, conflicts of interest, and dual relationships.

Therefore, it's important to be clear about your needs. If you're looking for help in diagnosing and treating a medically necessary mental health condition, then psychotherapy is the best fit.

If you are interested in targeted coaching on a specific topic for a time-limited period, online courses or coaching is the best option for you

What is a first psychotherapy session like?

During a first psychotherapy session, I will help you get a sense of what working together will be like. Although first psychotherapy sessions are often in person, they can also be on Zoom if we agree that this is most convenient for the both of us. Generally, we’ll begin our first session by having you (or you and your partner) discuss what is bringing you in to therapy at this time and to get a sense of what you’d like help with.  After that, I will guide you naturally through a series of questions to get more information about any symptoms you’re experiencing and also any relevant relational, family, career, and health information. We will also discuss confidentiality and it’s limits and set up a mutually convenient time when we can meet going forward. Over the course of the first 3 to 4 sessions, we will collaboratively identify treatment goals and discuss if once or twice weekly sessions are best to help you meet those goals.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, I do not prescribe medication. I do work collaboratively with psychiatrists and primary care providers when medication is a supportive part of your treatment.  If you take medication as a part of your treatment, I will ask you for consent to speak to your medication provider so that we can work as a team to meet your treatment goals.

How should I communicate with you?

Clients and potential clients can feel free to email me at emilyhaseltine3@gmail.com or by phone at 917-359-2521. I will return all calls and emails within 24 hours on weekdays and on Mondays if you leave messages on weekends. If you are having a mental health medical emergency please do NOT email and instead go straight to an emergency room.
